Internet Networking at its best?

Have you heard about the 2000 Blogger’s Project yet? No? Well, you have now. It seems that Tino Buntic got this idea to link to 2000 bloggers on their website and it seems to have taken off like wildfire, with interest in it being reported on the web in many places. I use Google Alert and it is coming up with several references to my vadirectory blog because someone else, and another person, and another are all linking to this blogging project. And why shouldn’t they? They’ve been added to the list - as I have! There are 334 on the list so far so heaps of availability but that’s sure to change quickly. For details click here.  Any my thanks to Jaypee who gave me the code.  You’ll see the whole thing here.

Just to give you a small snapshot - here’s the section where I am. It’s linked to my Virtual Assistant Blog where I am more actively posting.

Google Alert - Useful Tool

Some of you will be aware of Google Alert but do you use it? I have it set up to let me know every day of new pages published or new posts published that have key words in it or phrases that relate to what I’m doing. Even my name, so I know when someone is publishing something that might relate to me. The spelling of my name is not common so it doesn’t mean I’m going to end up with hundreds of posts every day but the occasional one comes through and it helps me keep track of when articles of mine are published, or when someone might have made comment about something I’ve said or done online.

An alert came through 2 weeks ago that mentioned Lisa Bevere and Kathie Thomas were speaking at a conference together in the US. I got excited when I saw that one - I hadn’t heard of this particular Kathie Thomas before (a pastor in a large church) but I do know who Lisa Bevere is and as I’m moving more into the speaking arena this year, in both the business and Christian business circles, it seemed prophetic for me - a thought and hope I’m going to hang on to!

The alerts are also useful for another reason. If you operate a blog in a particular topic you could have alerts let you know of posts or articles by others in that topic. It could help provide a whole lot new material for you to write about and link to! KMT

Copyright Infringement

I’ve just come across this article which I think is worthwhile reading for anyone who has content that could be copied.

Copyright Infringement: What If Someone Is Stealing From You?

Located perpetrator is key

By: John Dozier

As attorneys specializing in the litigation of Internet disputes, not a day goes by that we do not hear about a small online business getting ripped off through the theft of online content. Sometimes the property taken is a website or part of a website. Other times it is certain code or an e-book. But whenever it happens, you can be sure of one thing: It has value to the thief….

A New Look

I love working with Wordpress. So many templates available with options for 1, 2 and 3 columns and a whole lot of extras. Makes changing the look of your blog almost as easy as changing your clothes - you could do it daily if you wish (the blog I mean)! And so, my new look blog - for a while at least. On my ‘to do list’ when I have nothing else to do :-) I might actually spend sometime learning php and then create my own template from scratch. But for now there are enough choices out there to keep me happy.

If you haven’t yet explored operating a blog for your own business, you can get a free account at http://wordpress.com/ or, if you have your own website you could ask your web host if it’s possible to install Wordpress on the server. I do my own through Fantastico which was installed on my server by my host. Now I can set up Wordpress on any domain I set up for hosting and it’s quite easy to do. Not to mention in learning a new skill like this, it means I can also provide it as a service for my clients, as my proficiency increases. Something to think about, isn’t it? KMT

When You Change Address…

I’ve come to the conclusion that people treat the internet very different to the rest of their life. We hear about virtual this and virtual that. It makes me wonder if they think that life on the internet isn’t real. I’m a virtual assistant and I’m very real.

When you shift house in the ‘real’ world, you contact everyone and notify them. You even leave a forwarding address with the post office for a month or more so that mail can reach you and everyone catches up with where you are. So, why is this not the same for changed email addresses? I do understand that you can register for so many things (free things) that you might lose track of who and what has your email address but what about when you’ve paid for something? I’ve had this happen with people who pay to participate in a course I’ve written - the course lessons go out but the student is no longer on that address. How do I contact them?

You can set up old addresses to forward to new addresses until you’ve captured every bit of subscription you want to keep and notify them of the new address. Or keep checking the old address until you think it’s long enough. You don’t have to let the ‘nuisance’ senders know your new address. But I don’t understand when someone changes ISP (and therefore their email address) that they wouldn’t notify those whom they’ve paid money to in order to continue receiving what they’ve paid for. KMT
