When You Change Address…

I’ve come to the conclusion that people treat the internet very different to the rest of their life. We hear about virtual this and virtual that. It makes me wonder if they think that life on the internet isn’t real. I’m a virtual assistant and I’m very real.

When you shift house in the ‘real’ world, you contact everyone and notify them. You even leave a forwarding address with the post office for a month or more so that mail can reach you and everyone catches up with where you are. So, why is this not the same for changed email addresses? I do understand that you can register for so many things (free things) that you might lose track of who and what has your email address but what about when you’ve paid for something? I’ve had this happen with people who pay to participate in a course I’ve written - the course lessons go out but the student is no longer on that address. How do I contact them?

You can set up old addresses to forward to new addresses until you’ve captured every bit of subscription you want to keep and notify them of the new address. Or keep checking the old address until you think it’s long enough. You don’t have to let the ‘nuisance’ senders know your new address. But I don’t understand when someone changes ISP (and therefore their email address) that they wouldn’t notify those whom they’ve paid money to in order to continue receiving what they’ve paid for.
