		<description>Putting people on lists without there consent contravenes the CAN-SPAM laws in the US and the EU Electronic Communication Directives. Either way its bad business etiquette to do this and as you say annoys people who have not subscribed.

It&#039;s also bad marketing. Just because its easy and cheap to place people on an email list does not been its good business practice. You&#039;re just wasting everyones time.

I agree with you. Placing a contact in an informal database is fine and a polite introductory email will probably be ok if you quote a mutual business contact. But beware of keeping personal data on folks unnecessarily as in the EU this may also contravene the Data Protection Act.
