Do you blog or would like to?

I’m looking for questions that ‘newbies’ would ask about blogging. Things like what is it, how do you do it, how does it work, why?, etc.

If you haven’t yet entered the blogosphere, or are relatively new to it and looking to learn more, what are the things you would like to know?

Or, if you’ve been blogging for awhile but there are things you still can’t work out or always wondered about.

Please either leave your questions here or if you feel a little embarrassed about asking, feel free to send a message to me direct. Your questions will assist in a presentation I’m doing next month – having been a blogger for a few years now there will be things I take for granted that others do not know.

Thank you in advance.

  1. Is there a way to know how many visitors are coming to your site even when they are not leaving a comment? and What is the advantage in asking visitors to subscribe and does it help or hurt your blog if you do?

  2. Thanks Karen for your questions.

Yes, you can either place a statcounter on your blog (I use statcounter.com) or check the stats with your webhosting package. This will give you an idea of where people are from, what pages/posts they are reading and so on.

Inviting people to subscribe means they won’t miss a post and won’t have to remember to keep coming to your blog for updates because they will either receive it via email or see it in an RSS reader. You could offer incentives for subscribers – it helps you know how many are reading your blog and have an interest in it.

I know that people like Darren Rowse (Pro-blogger) and Chris Garrett off extras to email subscribers – no-one else gets them.

  3. Before I started blogging, my primary concern was how much time it would take to write blog entries and whether or not that was time well-spent (so new users might be interested in how to measure the return on their investment of time). My own blog is privately hosted so it’s mainly serving me as a practice arena until I make the leap to transfer it to a site with interactive capabilities. So my question now is about readiness and how I will promote and find readers for my blog once it’s really out there.
